The Anvil of Ice Winter of the World Vol 1 Scott Michael Rohan 9780380705474 Books

I read the Winter of the World series in middle school, about when all of us had finished what Tolkein there was and had branched out, some towards Stephen Donaldson and others towards Anne McCaffrey or Neil Hancock. I always thought Rohan was a pen name, anyway. The first book, "The Anvil of Ice" was interesting enough that I bought the next two in the series then went and sold them all to a used bookstore for a beat-up copy of "Dune". Reading it again after 30+ years, I can see why I made that decision. The plot is, well, it is suited for an adolescent read but has no depth to speak of. Elof the Smith bounces from one situation to the next fairly predictably, and his collection of companions along the way are more of a hindrance than a fellowship. And the developing romantic interest.....hmm. The following stories became darker and even less interesting, as I remember, Owning the Kindle edition will be an interesting experience as I can now wait another 30 years and see what I make of it then. O. S. Card has written a somewhat similar series with his "Alvin Maker" set of six books but they are more developed and a much better read.

great fantasy book
Original, immersive, a world rich in lore and a story worth delving into- will definately be reading the rest of the series.
This was definitely a book that I could not put down easily. The writing was great. The suspense was great. This was a great book
Truly an awesome classic of the genre. I first read this book over a decade ago as a teenager and it's haunted me ever since. Re discovering it here on was like meeting an old friend! I cannot recommend this series enough.
I read this years ago. It is as good now as it was way back then. Now it is on to the next.
I am so glad that SF Gateway has made this fantastic series available again after being out of print for many years! The Winter of the World Trilogy (Anvil of Ice, Forge in the Forest, and Hammer of the Sun) was one of my favorite fantasy works when I was growing up. It has it all...the young apprentice coming to power under a dark master, monsters, an implacable evil, magic, swords, and magic swords!
An enjoyable tale that reads like high fantasy but is solidly grounded in prehistory. This makes for an interesting mix, as myths and ice ages, neanderthals and sorcery all are part of the story, often in unexpected ways. The tale is engaging and moves along quickly - this is one of those books that keeps you turning the pages to find out what happens next.
On the negative side, the writing style takes some getting used to, there are a number of convenient coincidences within the plot, and fantasy tropes abound. That being said, this is one of the better fantasy books I have read recently, and I recommend you give it a try.
