This story moves along pretty well and is a good picture of the people and their lives during this period at this place. However, whoever edited this book did a terrible job. After explaining in the forward that the book would use the dialect, the pronunciation of words as the people would have, the editor allowed many, many completely correct pronunciations of words throughout the first half of this book which is what I've read so far. I guess a lot of people wouldn't even notice it but it is jarring to me to be reading along the text as it should be for these people and all of a sudden to come right smack up absolutely correct english. I don't think I'll ever like any of Giles' book as much as I like the Hannah Fowler series but this is a good read, good characters, good story, bad editing.
Miss Willie - The author hits her stride with this book and I enjoyed it a lot more than the "Hills". It gives a clear picture of what a woman from "outside" finds on Piney Ridge, the good and the bad. I'm afraid I was left, at the end, with a picture of Miss Willie in 30 years with a dip of snuff in her mouth but maybe not. It's a good story and I liked it quite a bit. 3rd: Tara's Healing: I don't much care for books where I don't like the main character. I don't care for people who spend most of their time feeling sorry for themselves. And, this guy, other than he'd been in a war didn't have all that much to feel sorry for himself about. he was raised rich, good education. became a doctor. So, he gets out of the psych hospital where he had apparently put himself so he'd have a better place to feel sorry for himself, meets up with an old army buddy and goes home with him, and stays and stays and stays. I know that on Piney Ridge they are glad to have company but I would assume they expect that company to leave at some point. So he falls in love with his friends wife and goes on with more feeling sorry for himself. The story of the people around him is pretty interesting and somehow winds up at the end with what looks to become a match between him and a 14 or 15 year old girl. I had to assume that this man was at least 30 or 35. All in all, this book would have been better without the main character.

I actually prefer her other books about the settlement of the Americas. Janice Holt Giles is an excellent writer, and makes you feel each of the lives she writes about.
arrived in a very timely manner. excellent stories, enjoyed each one in the trilogy and would highly recommends this book from this seller.
I had read Miss Willie before - I was glad to get the trio and finish the whole story! Excellent reading. I'll recommend it.
this book is a great read, 3 separate stories written in the 50's , about people in the mountain states, and life was so much different than it is now. Janice Holt Giles also wrote the Kentuckians, and many more books. She lived in the area she wrote about and her books are truly interesting!
I had read these books many years ago. I had forgotten how marvelous they were. I enjoyed them so much. I love everything about these stories. You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll wish you could have known these people personally. I highly recommend this set.
"The Piney Ridge Trilogy" is well written, accurate historical tale of life in the hills of Kentucky after WWII. All three books are filed with down home wisdom and espouse the family oriented values so lacking in much of society today. While not wanting to live in poverty, they definitively made me want to return to the simple, people centered lifestyle of the Piney Ridge.

The first book in the series, "The Enduring Hills," is a love story about Mary and Hod Pierce. Mary a school teacher, meets Hod on his way to fight on the Western European front in WWII. They fall in love and marry after his return from Europe. Mary continues to teach school, while Hod works at a big city factory for several years, until he and Mary realize the dishonesty and health sapping hours required to get ahead at the factory. Their heart is in the Piney Ridge and the book ends with them returning there to farm the land. Miss Willie takes up where the "The Enduring Hills" leaves off. Miss Willie, Mary's Aunt, whom she grew up with after her parents died was a school teacher who moved to the Piney Ridge of Kentucky from Texas. A city gal moved to the country, Miss Willie ends up falling in love with a hard working, principled, wise, loving farmer named Wills. The third book "Tara's Healing," is a about a WWII combat friend of Hod's who comes to live with him and Mary and to heal. All three books are engrossing tales that makes them hard to put down.
After so many dystopian fantasies, it was kind of a relief to read this gentle story about country people. Although, the characters in this book had to endure the nearest things to a dystopian universe that have ever happened in this world; the Great Depression, followed by World War II.

Hod Pierce is a country boy living on Piney Ridge in the Kentucky hills. His family has lived there ever since an ancestor received the land as payment for his service in the Revolutionary War. Hod himself has dreams of leaving the Ridge, seeing the world, and becoming “somebody.”

The first book is the story of how Hod met his wife, Mary, and how he came to decide he would be happiest living on the ridge after all.

The second book is the story of Mary's aunt who came to Piney Ridge to teach in the one-room school there and ultimately found her real mission there as wife to Hod's cousin little Wells Pierce.

The third book tells of Hod's former army captain, a doctor who is suffering from something resembling PTSD and a lack of love in his life. although he doesn't decide to move to the ridge permanently, he does learn enough about the truths of life to be able to put his own back together and return to a normal, healthy life.
